Throughout the past year the National Venture Capital Association was at the center of national debates that raged on taxation, healthcare, energy and financial services policy. More NVCA members testified in Congress and visited Capitol Hill and the Administration than ever before. The message that venture capital is a critical link in moving the Nation out of its economic downturn was heard and heeded in several areas while, in others, we continue to press the issue. 2010 has presented us with a new series of challenges and opportunities. A change in the taxation of carried interest is a battle we have waged successfully for the past three years, but we are threatened more today than ever before. The idea that venture capital can pose a “systemic risk to the US economy” has been discussed and resolved successfully in the Financial Services Bill. The healthcare legislation gives follow-on biologics new life while unfairly taxing the smallest of medical device firms. At a time when the industry faces more threats than ever we see ourselves as shrinking. Thus, your membership is more critical today than ever before. The Association understands that in a tough economic environment the value of every expenditure has to be carefully reviewed. In the current legislative and regulatory environment, NVCA should be considered a “must have” expenditure for your firm. In addition, the other valuable services we provide in the education, marketing, public relations, networking and insurance arenas often defray the cost of membership. NVCA membership dues renewal invoices were sent to your firm on May 1st. Please make sure that your firm renews its membership promptly so that we have the resources necessary to continue our efforts.
