The NVCA Medical Industry Group (MIG), under
the leadership of Ross Jaffe (Versant Ventures) is in the process of setting up
a meeting with the AMA on its CPT coding policies, their payment policy for new
medical technologies. NVCA and Ross Jaffe have been meeting with several
reimbursement specialists and other trade groups including, AdvaMed and MDMA to
discuss the AMA CPT coding process to gain a clearer perspective on this issue.
There seems to be an agreement by all the groups that there is no consistent
process among the specialty societies for making CPT coding applications to the
AMA and no consistent standard for determining what products deserve a certain
category code. NVCA is also working on putting together several case studies
that we can present to the AMA which will provide concrete examples of why
their policies are hindering the advancement of important medical innovations
for patients.
